As with nearly all card games, chance does play a role in Gin Rummy. The cards are shuffled to begin a game and this randomization of the cards does allow chance or luck to play a part in determining the game.
Gin Rummy games can be easily learned and and played successfully in only a short space of time. It is a fun game enjoyed by many of all ages, but to truly master this game, particularly the more intricate versions of Rummy, does requires skill that can only be gained with practice, good card sense, and many hours of play.
Card sense or keeping track of what cards have been revealed in your own hand, and the cards you and your opponents have played and discarded is a significant skill. in any card game, Being able to anticipate what cards are yet to be revealed and are either being held by your opponents, or remaining hidden in the deck, requires memory, focus, and attention to detail. However, this will give the player a winning advantage over the opponent, since knowing the cardsthat have been discarded will help far more strategic play.As such, despite the good hands/bad hands dealt by elements of chance, knowing how the play the cards effectively, means that Rummy games are predominantly games of skill
Many players, especially professional ones who play at competitive level will confirm that in order to consistently win,it is necessary to master the objectives and the strategies of forming melds and reducing a set of hands to zero or gin. Relying on chance or the luck of a good deal will rarely allow consistent winning play.
Sure, luck happens in card games and even in playing Gin Rummy, and exceptionally good hands can be dealt at anytime. Taking advantage of good cards by using tried and true strategies of play win games. But merely having good cards does not consistently win games- and it is possible that by making wrong move can still lose a hand, even with great cards. Nothing can be more frustrating to a player, either in competitive level or not, than losing a game with a good set of cards.
On average, consistent wins require a thorough understanding of the game structure, techniques and other elements of game, play, It is in knowing how the play the cards you are dealt. And that is skill. !
